Shillong, march 21: An attempted murder of a Naga village chief and the abduction of his wife in Manipur’s Chandel district has triggered strong condemnation, with a local student body urging immediate action to rescue the victim and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident occurred on the evening of March 19 at Ravalan village, where village chief Sumpi Ngramrung was allegedly attacked by a group of around five armed militants, suspected to be Kuki militants.
According to reports, the armed assailants entered the chief’s residence at around 7 pm while his family members were inside. When Ngramrung resisted and attempted to protect his family, he was fired upon in what has been described as a direct attempt on his life. He, however, managed to escape the attack.
The attackers then allegedly abducted his wife, forcing her into a waiting vehicle before fleeing towards the Sajik Tampak area. The incident has left the family and the local community deeply shaken.
Condemning the attack, the Chakpikarong branch of the Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (ALT) termed the incident “deeply disturbing” and described it as a “direct attempt on the life of the village chief.”
The student body noted that such acts come at a time when Manipur is already grappling with a “fragile and painful conflict situation,” adding that targeting a community leader and abducting his wife poses a “serious threat to peace and communal harmony.”
The ALT has demanded the immediate rescue of the abducted woman, swift arrest of those involved, and a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
It also urged the authorities to act without delay to prevent further escalation and ensure that justice is delivered.
