Mumbai, October 30: The Maharashtra government on Monday signed 15 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) worth ₹56,000 crore ($6.7 billion) aimed at expanding ports, developing shipyards, promoting clean fuel, and improving water transport across the state.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the agreements would help position Maharashtra as a “maritime superpower” by strengthening its port and shipping infrastructure. “It is a proud moment for us as we are developing a maritime ecosystem in the state,” he said, adding that the MOUs also cover cooperation in technology and human resources.
The largest investment — ₹42,000 crore — will go toward expanding Dighi Port, while JSW Infrastructure Ltd has committed ₹3,709 crore to expand its Jaigad and Dharamtar ports, officials said.
Additional investments will come from the Chowgule Group, Synergy Shipbuilders, and Goa Shipyard for the development of shipyards in the state.
The government also signed agreements with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to advance skilling initiatives and with Swedish firm Candela to develop passenger water transport systems.
Minister of Ports Nitesh Rane said the transformation of the water transport network would ease commuting for residents, particularly in Mumbai. Fadnavis added that new waterways and a marina are being developed in the city to strengthen coastal connectivity.
