DALLAS/HYDERABAD, June 6: K.T. Rama Rao, working president of India’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party, has called on entrepreneurs of Indian origin to establish IT operations in Telangana’s Tier-2 cities, citing the state’s infrastructure and post-pandemic global work trends.
Speaking to IT company representatives during his visit to Dallas, USA, Rama Rao – who previously served as Telangana’s IT minister – said that collaboration between governments and the private sector is essential to help India’s youth compete in emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence.
He highlighted the potential for small and medium-sized IT companies to set up offshore centres in India, noting that the post-COVID era has demonstrated the feasibility of working remotely for firms located anywhere in the world.
“Multinational giants like Amazon and Google may not move to Tier-2 cities, but there is enormous scope for mid-sized IT firms to tap into India’s talent pool and expand operations,” he said.
Rama Rao added that during the BRS government’s nine-year tenure, Telangana had proactively pushed to decentralise its IT ecosystem. “We’ve established IT hubs in 10 Tier-2 cities, offering rent-free facilities for the first year, plug-and-play infrastructure, and a range of incentives,” he said.
He pointed to strong road and rail connectivity in these smaller cities and projected significant development over the next two decades.
However, some industry representatives raised concerns during the discussions, saying that the pace of IT sector growth in Telangana has recently slowed, even as competition among Indian states for technology investments continues to intensify. Rama Rao’s U.S. visit is part of a broader effort by the BRS to attract international investment ahead of key political and economic developments in the region.
