Ranchi, May 5: The Jharkhand government has launched a dedicated health insurance scheme for lawyers and their dependents, expanding coverage under the Rajyakarmi Swasthya Beema Yojana, officials said on Saturday.
Under the scheme, lawyers will receive ₹5 lakh coverage for general illness and up to ₹10 lakh for serious health conditions, with the annual premium of ₹6,000 fully covered by the state. So far, 14,937 lawyers have registered for the programme.
Describing the initiative as a “historic step,” Chief Minister Hemant Soren said the move reflects his government’s commitment to social security and welfare for every section of society.
“With sensitivity towards the secure future of our state’s advocates and their families, the Abua government has moved forward,” Soren said in a statement. “Jharkhand has become the first state in the country where the future of all state advocates is being secured by connecting them to social security.”
The Chief Minister also urged legal professionals to make use of the Guruji Credit Card Yojana, which provides collateral-free education loans of up to ₹15 lakh to students pursuing higher education.
In a further boost to legal education in the state, Soren announced that Jharkhand will soon host the country’s best law university, as part of efforts to empower the legal fraternity and eliminate long-standing regional disparities.
“Our critics say we work for vote bank. But I believe that if we work, people will naturally join us,” he said. “Jharkhand is one of the backward states of the country. This saddens me. We are making every effort to erase this stigma.”
