Australia’s Albanese wins second term in landslide, promises ‘orderly’ government

SYDNEY, May 4 – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese secured a sweeping re-election victory on Sunday, pledging a “disciplined, orderly” government as his center-left Labor Party rode a wave of economic anxiety and global trade tensions to a historic second term.

With vote counting still underway, Labor was projected to win at least 82 seats in the 150-member parliament, according to partial results. The conservative Liberal-National coalition, led by opposition leader Peter Dutton, had secured just 36 seats, with 20 still undecided. Dutton also suffered a rare political blow, losing his own parliamentary seat.

“We will be a disciplined, orderly government in our second term,” Albanese told reporters at a post-election stop in his inner Sydney neighborhood, recalling his modest upbringing and paying tribute to his late mother.

The victory, which caught even senior Labor figures by surprise, comes amid rising cost-of-living concerns, housing pressures, and frustration over global tariff policies. Some analysts said former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent trade moves may have influenced voter sentiment.

“If we want to understand why a good chunk of the electorate shifted during the campaign, I think that’s the biggest factor,” said Henry Maher, a political lecturer at the University of Sydney. “People sought steady leadership during a period of instability.”

Labor Treasurer Jim Chalmers called the result “one for the ages” but said the party would govern with “humility,” mindful of Australians’ demands for economic relief and stability. Albanese has vowed to expand renewable energy, improve healthcare, address the housing crisis, and deliver targeted tax cuts.

Dutton’s campaign focused on curbing immigration, lifting a nuclear power ban, and slashing public sector spending. In a concession speech, the former police officer said, “We didn’t do well enough during this campaign… I accept full responsibility.”

The campaign was largely uneventful but not without moments of levity — including Albanese tumbling off a stage at a rally, and Dutton accidentally injuring a cameraman with a stray football.

World leaders including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson extended congratulations to Albanese, who confirmed ongoing support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. The Australian premier said he would soon speak with the leaders of Indonesia and Ukraine, among others.

Labor’s return to power comes as Australian families grapple with rising prices on essentials such as milk, petrol, and electricity — economic pain that became central to the 36-day campaign. “We’ve been given a great honour of serving the Australian people, and we’ll work hard each and every day,” Albanese said.
