New Delhi, Aug. 2 : The Delhi Police have intensified verification of second-hand vehicle dealers across the national capital as part of heightened security measures ahead of Independence Day celebrations, with senior officers directing police stations to closely scrutinise documentation related to used-car sales.
The directions were issued during a high-level security review meeting chaired by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar on Saturday, where Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Anil Shukla briefed officers on the security arrangements for the August 15 celebrations.
According to sources, Station House Officers (SHOs) have been instructed to launch special verification drives targeting second-hand vehicle dealers to ensure that ownership records, registration documents and transfer formalities are complete and up to date.
Police officials said that while verification of used-car businesses is a routine exercise, greater emphasis has been placed on the process this year following the investigation into last year’s Red Fort blast.
During the briefing, officers were reminded of the alleged use of a second-hand Hyundai i20 in the incident. Investigators had found that the vehicle had changed hands several times without the ownership being officially transferred, creating gaps in the documentation and complicating the investigation.
Officials have now been directed to ensure that all used vehicles being bought and sold through dealers have proper documentation and legally completed ownership transfers to prevent misuse by anti-social or criminal elements.
The intensified verification drive forms part of the Delhi Police’s broader Independence Day security strategy, which includes increased surveillance, intelligence gathering, vehicle checks and enhanced monitoring of sensitive locations across the city.
Security agencies remain on high alert in the run-up to Independence Day, with multiple preventive measures being implemented to ensure the safety of the national capital during the celebrations.
