Guwahati, Dec 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Assam from December 20, focusing on major infrastructure initiatives, a significant industrial investment, and political outreach ahead of the state elections due in the coming months.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday reviewed preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit, describing it as a crucial moment for the state’s development. Modi is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati at 2.45 pm on Saturday.

The visit will begin with the inauguration of a statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, at Borjhar, followed by the inauguration of the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The Prime Minister is also expected to address a public rally near the airport, where the Chief Minister inspected arrangements earlier.

After the rally, Modi will visit the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters to interact with party leaders and workers from across Assam. He will stay overnight at the state guesthouse in Koinadhora.

On Sunday morning, the Prime Minister will participate in ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ with select students aboard a ship on the Brahmaputra river. He will then visit the newly built Swahid Smarak Kshetra before travelling to Namrup in Dibrugarh district.

The highlight of the second day will be the laying of the foundation stone for a Rs 12,000-crore ammonia-urea plant at Namrup. The project, with a capacity of 12 lakh metric tonnes, is expected to significantly boost Assam’s industrial growth. Sarma had earlier reviewed preparations for the Namrup programme on December 10.
