Chandigarh, Dec 17: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday announced that Hansi will be accorded district status, making it the 23rd district of the state, with the official notification to be issued within a week. With the announcement, Haryana will get a new district after a gap of nine years.

Saini said Hansi will formally attain district status from the revenue administration perspective once the notification is issued. Under the territorial reorganisation, the newly formed Hansi district will comprise the Hansi and Narnaund sub-divisions, while Hisar district will retain the Hisar and Barwala sub-divisions.

Addressing a ‘Vikas Rally’ in Hansi, the chief minister said the proposal to carve out Hansi as a separate district was first mooted in 2016. He noted that Police District Hansi was created in 2017 and currently has six police stations. The chief minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones of three development projects worth ₹77.30 crore at the rally.

He said development works worth ₹1,008 crore have been completed in the Hansi assembly constituency over the past 11 years and announced a special grant of ₹5 crore for the town’s development. Announcing a series of infrastructure initiatives, Saini said the existing 50-bed hospital in Hansi will be upgraded to a 100-bed facility.

He also announced the phased development of a modern police line with residential facilities, a proposal to construct a sports stadium subject to availability of land, and beautification of Amti Lake. Saini said district status would lead to improved governance, better infrastructure, roads and water supply, besides ensuring easier access to government services for residents of Hansi and Narnaund. He also expressed hope that the move would help reduce crime and create more employment opportunities in the region.

The announcement was welcomed by leaders across party lines, with BJP leaders terming it the fulfilment of a long-pending public demand, while Congress leaders also welcomed the decision, though they pointed to delays in granting district status. Highlighting Hansi’s historical significance, the chief minister described it as a land of valour and sacrifice, once known as the gateway of Hindustan.

He recalled its role during the First War of Independence in 1857 and said the town, earlier known as Asi and Asigarh, had served as the capital of the Satluj province during the reign of Emperor Harsha. With the inclusion of Hansi, Haryana now has 23 districts. Since coming to power in 2014, BJP governments in the state have created two new districts — Dadri and Hansi.
