Guwahati, Jan 2: The Assam cabinet on Thursday approved major capital expenditure proposals for the education and healthcare sectors, clearing projects worth over Rs 1,650 crore, signalling a renewed push to strengthen public infrastructure at the start of the New Year.
At its first meeting of 2026, the council of ministers sanctioned Rs 1,201.16 crore for the construction of a new medical college anchored around Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, along with the development of the Kalapahar campus in Guwahati.
Officials said the project is aimed at expanding tertiary healthcare capacity and boosting medical education facilities in the state capital.
The cabinet also approved Rs 455 crore for the construction of 100 new schools across Assam. The initiative is intended to strengthen basic education infrastructure, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
Officials said the decisions reflect the state government’s continued focus on health and education as priority sectors.
The approved projects are expected to improve access to quality healthcare and education while creating long-term capacity in key public services.
