Guwahati, Dec 24: The law and order situation in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district remained tense on Monday evening after incidents of arson and torching of shops were reported amid ongoing protests, officials said.
Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS, who is camping in the violence-hit area, appealed to protesters to refrain from violence and cooperate with the administration.
Warning of strict action, Singh said those involved in torching shops and other acts of violence would be identified and proceeded against in accordance with the law.
To prevent further escalation, additional security forces have been deployed in sensitive locations, particularly in Kheroni and adjoining areas.
Senior police officials are also engaging directly with agitating groups in an effort to defuse tensions and restore normalcy, officials said.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita continue to remain in force to prevent unlawful gatherings, with a heavy security presence across the district.
State Minister Ranoj Pegu appealed for peace and restraint, urging all sides to maintain calm. Officials said a tripartite dialogue involving stakeholders has been scheduled for December 26 under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address the issues underlying the unrest.
While the situation remains tense, authorities maintained that it is under control and that concerted administrative and security measures are underway to bring normalcy back to the area.
