New Delhi, Aug 11: Singer Guru Randhawa has contributed ₹7 lakh towards the rehabilitation of flood-affected families in Assam, with the funds set to support the construction of 35 permanent flood-resistant homes, according to the Sikh Aid Foundation.Randhawa has partnered with the organisation for the housing initiative, which will cover families in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Nepali Khuti in Upper Assam.
The Sikh Aid Foundation expressed gratitude to the singer for extending support to families affected by the floods and said the initiative would help them rebuild their homes and lives.The contribution comes as several parts of Assam continue to deal with the impact of flooding that began on July 19. The disaster has affected thousands of people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure in several districts.Golaghat has emerged as one of the worst-affected districts, with more than 71,000 people reportedly impacted.
Sivasagar and Jorhat have also witnessed significant effects, with more than 21,000 and 13,000 people affected respectively.Floodwaters have damaged roads, bridges, embankments and other infrastructure, creating additional challenges for residents and relief agencies.Several rivers have also been reported to be flowing above their respective danger levels.
These include the Dhansiri at Golaghat and Numaligarh and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi.Randhawa is among several public figures who have extended support to flood-affected communities. Actors and other celebrities, including Kartik Aaryan, Ayushmann Khurrana and Tahira, have also contributed to relief efforts.The housing initiative is aimed at providing affected families with more durable accommodation and supporting their recovery beyond immediate flood relief.
The project underscores the growing focus on long-term rehabilitation as Assam continues to cope with the humanitarian and infrastructure impact of the floods.
