East Singhbhum, June 29: Continuous rainfall in East Singhbhum district has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Gudra River in the Kowali police station area, severely affecting nearby regions. One of the worst-hit spots was the school in Harina, where floodwaters suddenly entered the school premises, leaving students trapped and scrambling for safety.

As the water rose rapidly, students rushed to the school’s rooftop to save themselves. Fortunately, all children managed to reach higher ground in time and avoided serious harm.

Upon receiving the alert, Rural SP Rishabh Garg acted swiftly and instructed local police to initiate rescue operations. Kowali police station in-charge Dhananjay Kumar Paswan led the evacuation efforts. With the support of local residents and emergency responders, all 162 children were successfully rescued from the flooded campus using ropes and improvised methods.

SP Garg confirmed that all students were safely evacuated and temporarily sheltered at the Potka police station. Parents from Musabani and Dumaria areas were informed and are now arriving to take their children home.

Meanwhile, the flooding has also affected homes in Baridih and nearby villages. Locals reported that the sudden surge in Gudra River’s water level is responsible for the inundation, which has caused widespread disruption and distress in the area. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Amid continuous rainfall in East Singhbhum district, water levels in rivers have risen significantly, prompting authorities to issue alerts for low-lying and riverbank areas of Jamshedpur. The district administration has appealed to citizens residing near the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued during emergencies.

Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi urged residents living along the banks of the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, as well as other flood-prone zones, to stay cautious. He warned that sudden surges in river levels could trigger flooding. People are advised to move to safer, elevated areas during heavy rains.

The DC emphasized that the safety of residents remains the administration’s top priority. Sub-divisional officers, municipal officials, block development officers (BDOs), and circle officers (COs) are actively monitoring vulnerable areas.

The administration has called for public cooperation to prevent any casualties. For emergency assistance or to report any incidents, citizens can contact the district control room at 0657-2444233.
