Kolkata, June 29: A medical report on a law college student who alleged gang rape inside her campus earlier this week concluded that sexual assault “cannot be ruled out,” prompting Kolkata Police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrest four individuals, including a college security guard.
The incident allegedly took place on June 25 inside a guard’s room on the ground floor of South Calcutta Law College. The 22-year-old student, in her complaint, said she was gang-raped by multiple assailants, who also recorded videos of the assault and threatened to leak them unless she complied with their demands.
The medical report, released on Saturday, noted abrasions and injury marks on the student’s body. While no lacerations or foreign objects were found, the report said swabs had been collected for further forensic examination.
Kolkata Police arrested security guard Pinaki Banerjee on Saturday, raising the total number of arrests to four. Earlier, three others, including Monojit Mishra, a former student leader affiliated with the Trinamool Congress student wing, had been taken into custody. All three are facing charges of gang rape and wrongful confinement and are in police custody until July 1.
Mobile phones allegedly used to record the assault have been seized, and CCTV footage from the college premises is being examined, police said. The student’s statement was recorded before a judicial magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and she is undergoing counselling.
The case has triggered widespread protests across Kolkata and its suburbs. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was detained during a demonstration near the college. The Congress and CPI(M) also staged protests demanding swift justice.
In Delhi, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra announced a four-member fact-finding team, including former Union Ministers and MPs, which will visit the crime site and submit a report to party president J.P. Nadda.
The Trinamool Congress has sought to distance itself from Mishra, claiming he has not held a party post since 2022. “We are not shielding anyone. Police acted within 12 hours,” said minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, while party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called for “exemplary punishment” for the guilty.
However, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks — questioning how the government could prevent such acts between “friends” — drew criticism from opposition parties and activists. Meanwhile, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, urging immediate steps to ensure the survivor’s safety and allow NCW access for inquiry.
