New Delhi, June 5: India recorded nearly 300 fresh COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with total active infections rising to 4,302 as of Wednesday, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The country also reported two additional COVID-related deaths, bringing the total fatalities for 2025 to seven.
Kerala accounted for the highest number of new cases during this period, reflecting a localized surge amid a broader global uptick in infections.
The recent increase in cases is attributed to four variants: LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1. The latter is a newly detected subvariant in India and has been designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “Variant Under Monitoring” due to significant changes in viral characteristics, though its full epidemiological impact remains unclear.
Health experts say waning immunity from previous vaccinations or infections is a key factor behind the resurgence, leaving more individuals vulnerable to reinfection. Most infections reported recently have been mild, with the overall fatality rate remaining low.
“The virus continues to mutate, and some variants may spread more easily or evade immunity, triggering fresh waves,” health officials noted. India’s COVID-19 situation aligns with trends seen in multiple countries, where cases are rising but severe illness and deaths remain limited.
