Patna, Sep 9: The Bihar government has increased the monthly honorarium of contractual faculty members and resident doctors working at state-run medical colleges and hospitals, with the revised rates coming into effect retrospectively from September 1, 2026.

Under the revised structure, contractual professors will now receive ₹2.07 lakh per month, up from ₹1.80 lakh, while associate professors will get ₹1.55 lakh compared with the earlier ₹1.35 lakh.

The honorarium for assistant professors has been raised from ₹1.10 lakh to ₹1.25 lakh per month. Senior residents and tutors will now receive ₹1.15 lakh, while the monthly honorarium of junior residents has been increased from ₹65,000 to ₹75,000.

The decision was taken following recommendations of the authorised committee and approval from the competent authority. Directions have also been issued to the concerned medical colleges and hospitals to implement the revised rates.

Health Minister Nishant Kumar said contractual professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents and junior residents play an important role in the functioning of government medical colleges.

“Keeping in view their contributions, the government has decided to increase their honorarium,” Kumar said.

He said the move would incentivise medical professionals and strengthen the availability of specialised human resources at government medical colleges.

The government expects the revised honorarium structure to help strengthen Bihar’s healthcare and medical education system and improve the availability of specialised medical personnel in state-run institutions.
