Ranchi, July 16 : Jharkhand is set to strengthen its medical education infrastructure after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved a new private medical college in Dumka district with 100 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session.

According to the MBBS seat matrix released by the NMC for the upcoming academic year, Sido-Kanhu Medical College and Hospital at Ranishwar in Dumka has been granted permission as a new establishment with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS students. The approval takes the total number of medical colleges in Jharkhand to 11, including AIIMS Deoghar.

With the addition of the new college and expansion of seats in existing institutions, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase from 1,130 to 1,500, marking a net addition of 370 seats.

Director of Sido-Kanhu Medical College and Hospital, Murali Nair, said the institution has developed modern infrastructure and academic facilities for medical education. He added that a 650-bed hospital has been operational for the past four years, providing healthcare services to patients in the region. The hospital is equipped with advanced medical facilities, including modular operation theatres, CT scan services and dialysis units.

The NMC has also approved an increase in MBBS seats across existing medical colleges in the state for the 2026-27 academic session. At the state-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, the intake has been increased by 70 seats, taking the total from 180 to 250.

In the private sector, Manipal Tata Medical College has received approval to increase its MBBS intake from 200 to 250 seats, while Lakshmi Chandravanshi Medical College and Hospital has been allowed to raise its intake from 100 to 150 seats. Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital, which began operations last year, has been granted approval to double its MBBS seats from 100 to 200.

Following these revisions, government medical colleges in Jharkhand will collectively offer 800 MBBS seats, up from 730 earlier, while private medical colleges will account for 700 seats, compared to 400 previously.

Excluding AIIMS Deoghar, the state’s 10 government and private medical colleges will together offer 1,500 MBBS seats in the 2026-27 academic session, significantly expanding opportunities for aspiring medical students and strengthening the state’s healthcare education capacity.
