Ranchi, July 8:Timely rainfall during the first week of July has revived agricultural activities across Ranchi district, with farmers beginning paddy transplantation in fields that had already been prepared.
Encouraged by the improved weather conditions, the Agriculture Department has set a target to bring 65,000 hectares under paddy cultivation during the ongoing Kharif season.
To support farmers, the department is distributing certified paddy seeds at a 50 per cent subsidy. A total of 1,150 quintals of paddy seed has been earmarked for distribution, of which 366 quintals have already been lifted by farmers.
The subsidised seeds are being made available at ₹145 to ₹225 per kilogram, significantly lower than the open market price of ₹400 to ₹500 per kilogram.
Although rainfall remains below the seasonal average, recent showers have created favourable conditions for transplantation. Officials said the district has received 88.29 mm of rainfall so far against the normal average of 193.2 mm for the corresponding period.
The latest spell of rain has, however, renewed hopes for a successful Kharif season. In view of the uncertain rainfall pattern, the Agriculture Department is also encouraging farmers to diversify into Mandua (finger millet/ragi), a crop that requires less water.
Farmers cultivating Mandua will receive a 50 per cent subsidy on seeds along with an incentive of ₹3,000 per acre to promote its cultivation.
The department has also fixed cultivation targets for other Kharif crops, including 6,500 hectares of maize, 19,400 hectares of pulses, 1,484 hectares of sesame, and 500 hectares of Mandua.
Officials expressed optimism that continued rainfall in the coming weeks will help farmers complete transplantation on time and ensure a healthy Kharif crop across the district.
