Thunder Bay, Mar 28: Community leaders and environmental advocates gathered in Thunder Bay to highlight the growing intersection of climate change, environmental degradation and racial inequality at an annual diversity event.

The luncheon, organised by Diversity Thunder Bay, marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and focused on what speakers described as a “polycrisis” affecting both people and the planet.

Delivering the keynote address, Julia Croome of Ecojustice Canada said the world is facing a “triple planetary crisis” comprising climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.

She emphasised that environmental challenges are deeply interconnected with social inequalities, particularly affecting vulnerable and marginalised communities.

Event organiser Paul Berger said the discussion was timely amid growing concerns over environmental issues and their broader social impact.

He pointed to regional concerns, including environmental risks and the need to safeguard natural resources such as Lake Superior, stressing that conservation efforts require collective responsibility.

Speakers also highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate-related disasters on Indigenous communities, noting that evacuations due to wildfires and other emergencies often affect remote First Nations populations for extended periods.

Croome said protecting environmental and human rights is essential to ensuring sustainable and inclusive development, adding that such rights create the conditions necessary for both ecological and social diversity to thrive.

She also underlined the need for long-term action to address climate risks, reduce pollution and preserve biodiversity, while envisioning a more balanced relationship between humans and nature.

Participants at the event called for stronger environmental protections, community engagement and policy action to address the interconnected challenges of inequality and climate change.
