Bangladesh signals cooperation with ICC over T20 world cup security in India

Dhaka, Jan 8: Bangladesh has softened its stance on participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India, indicating a willingness to engage with the International Cricket Council to address security-related concerns.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it would maintain close coordination with the ICC and tournament organisers to ensure the national team’s safe participation. The move comes days after the board had expressed reluctance to send its players to India, citing safety issues.

The ICC has responded by assuring Bangladesh that its concerns will be taken into account during the event’s security planning. Officials from both sides reportedly held discussions earlier this week as part of ongoing consultations.

The 20-team T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled to begin on February 7. While matches will be held across both countries, Bangladesh’s group-stage fixtures are currently allotted exclusively to Indian venues, which had prompted Dhaka to seek a change.

Tensions escalated following the removal of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from his Indian Premier League franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, a decision reportedly taken under the directive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The move triggered strong reactions in Bangladesh, leading the interim government to suspend IPL broadcasts in the country.

Amid speculation that Bangladesh could face sporting penalties for non-participation, the BCB rejected reports suggesting the ICC had issued an ultimatum threatening forfeiture of points, calling such claims inaccurate.

The cricketing dispute unfolds against a backdrop of strained diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. Recent incidents, including communal violence in Bangladesh, protests in India, and political upheaval following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have added to bilateral tensions.

Despite the broader political climate, the BCB said it remains committed to constructive dialogue with the ICC, expressing hope that a mutually acceptable arrangement can be reached to allow Bangladesh’s participation in the global tournament.
