Arakkonam, Dec 25: A Tamil Nadu police constable was detained after a law student recorded him allegedly harassing her on a moving train bound for Coimbatore, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred while the student was travelling alone to Coimbatore. According to officials, the man seated next to her allegedly began harassing her during the journey. Shocked by the incident, the student took out her mobile phone and recorded the act before alerting the Railway Police.
“A law student recorded a policeman allegedly harassing her on a train to Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. She alerted Railway Police, and the train was stopped at Arakkonam,” a police official said.
Following the alert, the train was halted at Arakkonam Railway Station, where Railway Police detained the accused for questioning. “The train was halted at Arakkonam Railway Station, where officers detained the man, identified as Sheik Mohammed, attached to the RS Puram Police Station,” the official said.
The accused constable, identified as Sheik Mohammed, is posted at the RS Puram Police Station in Coimbatore. Further investigation into the incident is underway, police added.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of women in public transport. In a similar case reported in September, a Central Government Agriculture Department officer was arrested in Chennai after a 17-year-old college student accused him of sexually harassing her on a government bus. Departmental action was initiated in that case following a police probe.
“Further investigation was underway,” police said.
