Washington, Dec 25: U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to aggressively pursue the death penalty for violent criminals as soon as he is inaugurated, setting up a stark contrast with President Joe Biden’s recent clemency actions.
“As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters,” Trump said on Tuesday via his social media platform, Truth Social, as per The Indian Express.
Trump’s remarks came in response to Biden’s announcement on Monday that he had commuted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates, converting their penalties to life imprisonment without parole.
Biden, who has long opposed the death penalty, placed a moratorium on federal executions shortly after taking office in January 2021. His actions reversed Trump’s decision to resume executions during his presidency, ending a nearly two-decade pause on federal capital punishment.
Trump, whose administration oversaw 13 federal executions—the highest number in a single term in U.S. history—criticized Biden’s clemency as leniency toward “the worst killers in the world.” His transition team called the decision “abhorrent.”
Clemency actions are irreversible by subsequent administrations, though Trump’s pledge suggests a return to a stricter approach in future federal cases.
Biden’s decision reflects growing opposition to the death penalty among reform advocates who cite ethical concerns and systemic flaws in its application. Trump, however, argues that capital punishment is a vital deterrent against heinous crimes and has positioned the issue as part of his broader tough-on-crime platform.
