Musk proposes ‘America Party’ as rift with Trump deepens over spending bill

Washington D.C., July 06: Elon Musk unveiled new details on Friday about plans to launch a third political force in the United States, the “America Party,” aiming to create a swing bloc in Congress following a public fallout with President Donald Trump over a contentious spending bill.

The proposal comes as Musk escalates his opposition to Trump’s recently signed “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” which narrowly passed Congress, clearing the House by just four votes and requiring Vice President JD Vance to break a 50–50 tie in the Senate.

“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” Musk wrote on X, the social media platform he owns. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people.”

While Musk did not specify which races he might target, he emphasized that the objective was “leverage, not dominance.” A poll he posted on X showed strong public support, with more than 65% of 1.25 million respondents voting in favor of forming the new party.

“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system,” Musk added in another post on July 4.

Musk’s comments mark a sharp departure from his prior alignment with Trump. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO donated $277 million to Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign and was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the start of Trump’s second term. The department claimed to save $190 billion through deep agency cuts, although a watchdog report cited by The Guardian later estimated the measures may have cost taxpayers $135 billion in disruption.

Musk stepped down from DOGE in May, around the same time he began openly criticizing Trump’s fiscal plans, particularly the newly signed budget which he claimed would raise the national debt by $3.3 trillion. He also threatened to fund primary challengers to lawmakers who voted in favor of the legislation.

The feud prompted a fiery response from Trump, who reportedly warned Musk that open opposition could carry consequences, including cancellation of federal contracts with his companies. In a post on Truth Social, Trump went further, suggesting – with no legal basis – that Musk’s U.S. citizenship could be revoked.

“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head to South Africa,” Trump wrote. “We might have to put Doge on Elon. Doge is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible?”

It remains unclear whether Musk will formally register the America Party or how it would operate in upcoming elections. But the billionaire’s move adds a new layer of volatility to an already polarized political landscape as the 2026 midterms approach.
