Maryland lawmakers move to tighten digital gambling oversight ahead of march hearings

WASHINGTON, Feb 20: Lawmakers in Maryland have introduced a bill aimed at curbing unlicensed online gambling, expanding enforcement beyond operators to include global web hosting companies.

The proposed legislation, HB 1226, would require hosting providers to take down websites offering unlicensed online wagering to Maryland residents. Companies that knowingly host or support illegal gambling platforms could face penalties under the measure.

The bill defines unlawful gambling broadly, covering online contests or promotions that simulate casino-style games as well as unlicensed sports betting. By extending responsibility to web hosting services, lawmakers are seeking to tighten oversight of the digital gambling ecosystem and prevent unlicensed operators from accessing Maryland consumers.

However, questions remain about enforcement. Many web hosting providers are based outside the United States, raising jurisdictional challenges over how Maryland authorities could compel international firms to comply or impose penalties.

HB 1226 forms part of a wider push by Maryland lawmakers to reshape the state’s digital gaming framework. Hearings scheduled for March 11 are expected to address broader gambling reforms.

State Senator Ron Watson has proposed legislation to authorise full-scale online casino gaming, establish a regulated online poker system and allow Maryland to join multi-state gaming agreements. His proposal would also require a statewide referendum, leaving the final decision to voters.

Meanwhile, Senators Jeff Waldstreicher and Chris West are advocating for a ban on sweepstakes casinos as part of efforts to shut down unlicensed gambling activity.

Together, the measures signal an intensifying effort by Maryland policymakers to crack down on illegal gambling while debating the future structure of the state’s online gaming market.
