Canberra, Mar 24: Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday cautioned that the world is entering a “brutal, harsh and unforgiving” phase, as she highlighted shifting global dynamics marked by prolonged conflicts and rising geopolitical uncertainty.
Addressing the Australian Parliament, the European Commission president said Europe continues to offer stability, but acknowledged that the nature of that stability is undergoing significant change.
Referring to ongoing tensions, she noted that Europe has been dealing with over four years of conflict in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, alongside emerging risks of escalation in the Middle East.
“The comfort of the past is no longer assured. The global environment is becoming increasingly complex and challenging,” von der Leyen said, underlining the need for stronger international cooperation.
During the visit, Australia and the European Union reached a key agreement aimed at enhancing bilateral trade. The deal is expected to reduce tariffs and improve market access across multiple sectors, signaling deeper economic engagement between the two partners.
Officials said the agreement would open new opportunities for businesses on both sides and strengthen supply chains amid global uncertainties.
Von der Leyen stressed that partnerships between like-minded democracies are essential to navigate the evolving global order, adding that cooperation in trade, technology and security will play a crucial role in ensuring long-term stability.
The development comes at a time when nations are increasingly seeking strategic alliances to counter economic disruptions and geopolitical tensions worldwide.
