OTTAWA, April 9 – Canada has increased its federal minimum wage by 2.4% to C$17.75 per hour, a move expected to benefit thousands of Indian nationals working or studying in the country, particularly in federally regulated sectors such as banking, telecommunications, and interprovincial transportation.

The hike, which came into effect on April 1, raises the rate from C$17.30, and is part of the government’s annual adjustment based on the previous year’s Consumer Price Index. Around 26,000 workers are estimated to benefit directly from the increase, according to Canada’s Ministry of Employment.

“The federal minimum wage brings stability and certainty to Canadian workers and businesses alike and helps reduce income inequality across the board,” said Minister of Employment Steven MacKinnon. “Today’s increase brings us one step closer to building a more fair economy.” The new wage rate applies to both Canadian citizens and immigrants, including temporary foreign workers and student interns. Employers have been directed to update their payroll systems to reflect the revised rate.

The wage hike comes amid mounting cost-of-living pressures, with inflation remaining a key concern for Canadian households. Rising prices have become a central issue in the run-up to the 2025 federal elections, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government facing criticism over affordability.

For Canada’s sizable Indian diaspora — which comprises around 1.3 million people, or 3.7% of the population, according to the 2021 Census — the increase offers some relief. Many Indian immigrants and international students work part-time in federally regulated jobs to support their living and tuition expenses. Canada remains a top destination for Indian students pursuing higher education, and the wage hike is expected to boost earnings for those interning in sectors covered by the federal minimum wage.

In addition to the federal increase, several provinces are also adjusting their minimum wages. Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Yukon are implementing hikes ranging from C$0.30 to C$0.35 per hour in efforts to align with inflation and improve affordability. The changes reflect Canada’s broader commitment to maintaining wage growth in line with rising consumer prices, even as economic pressures persist.
