Dubai, June 21: A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Iran on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, as Israel continued its aerial bombardment of Iranian targets.
The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 km (6 miles), hit about 37 km (23 miles) southwest of the city of Semnan, the USGS reported. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency gave a slightly higher magnitude of 5.2. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
The tremor came as tensions in the region escalated, with Israel launching repeated waves of air strikes on Iranian territory. The timing of the earthquake further rattled residents already on edge amid the ongoing conflict.
Iran is located in a seismically active zone and experiences frequent earthquakes, many of which cause casualties and infrastructure damage.
