MONTE CARLO, May 28 – Kush Maini became the first Indian driver to win a Formula 2 race in Monaco on Saturday, delivering a landmark victory in the prestigious sprint race and triggering celebrations among fans as the Indian national anthem echoed through the streets of Monte Carlo.

Maini, racing for DAMS Lucas Oil, started from pole position and held off sustained pressure from Gabriele Mini of PREMA Racing to clinch the win on one of motorsport’s most iconic circuits. The 24-year-old kept his composure through a mid-race safety car period to secure the second F2 win of his career.

“P1, first Indian to win in Monaco too. It’s a great honour and a dream come true,” Maini said after the race. “I want to say thank you to DAMS and everyone who has supported me. We keep believing!”

The victory was a rare moment of national pride for Indian motorsport, with fans describing the playing of the Indian national anthem on the Monaco podium as an emotional milestone.

Maini, a member of the Alpine Academy, now sits 13th in the 2025 Formula 2 Drivers’ Standings with 11 points. His team, DAMS Lucas Oil, is sixth in the team rankings with 54 points.

Monaco, often dubbed the crown jewel of the F2 calendar, is known for its tight street layout and historical significance. Maini’s triumph at the circuit is expected to raise his profile significantly and fuel hopes of future success at the highest levels of international racing.
