Dallas, July 16 : Defending champions Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a heated FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal on Wednesday, booking their place in Sunday’s final against Spain after a match marked by physical challenges, on-field confrontations and controversial refereeing decisions.
England made a bright start and created early pressure in Argentina’s half, but the opening stages were overshadowed by a series of robust tackles and confrontations. Just two minutes into the match, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fouled by Leandro Paredes, while Lionel Messi was later brought down by Elliott Anderson, triggering tense exchanges between players from both sides.
The match remained fiercely contested throughout the first half, with repeated clashes involving Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, Morgan Rogers and Paredes. Despite protests from the England bench, referee Ismail Elfath allowed play to continue on several occasions without disciplinary action.
The first yellow card was shown in the 38th minute when Anderson was booked for a challenge on Messi. Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez was cautioned four minutes later for pulling back Rogers as tempers continued to flare.
England took the lead before Argentina mounted another trademark comeback. Enzo Fernandez equalised before Lautaro Martinez scored the winner to send Lionel Scaloni’s side into a second successive World Cup final.
Messi was named Player of the Match after providing two assists, playing a decisive role in Argentina’s comeback victory.
The tensions continued after the final whistle as Bellingham became involved in a confrontation with Argentina players Valentin Barco, Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez. The exchange escalated before veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi stepped in to separate the players and restore order.
The semifinal also reignited debate over refereeing and VAR decisions, with social media platforms witnessing widespread discussion over the officiating during Argentina’s victory. Several users questioned decisions related to Argentina’s goals, while others defended the match officials, adding to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding VAR throughout the tournament.
With the victory, Argentina advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they will face Spain on Sunday in a bid to retain their world title. England will meet France in the third-place playoff.
