Madhubani, Aug 30: The festive shopping season from Durga Puja to Diwali is expected to generate around 200 seasonal gig jobs in e-commerce delivery in Madhubani district, offering short-term earning opportunities particularly to Class 10-pass youth.
The anticipated rise in online orders during Durga Puja, Dhanteras and Diwali is prompting delivery agencies to expand their workforce to meet the seasonal demand.
E-commerce companies such as Amazon and Flipkart operate delivery services through third-party agencies in Madhubani city, Benipatti, Jhanjharpur and Jaynagar, according to information available from local delivery agencies.
Shubham Kumar, Amazon manager at Nandani Enterprises in Madhubani, said the company’s city office currently has around 25 delivery personnel.
“Amazon has an office in Madhubani city, where currently 25 delivery men are working,” Kumar said.
There are around 18 delivery personnel in Jhanjharpur and 13 in Jaynagar, he said, adding that the festive rush would require additional manpower.
“During the festival season, about 10 additional delivery men are needed,” Kumar said.
He added that the minimum qualification for a delivery job is generally Class 10, making the seasonal positions accessible to young people seeking immediate employment.
“The minimum qualification for hiring a delivery man is usually a 10th-grade pass,” Kumar said.
According to local agencies, Madhubani city has more than six delivery and courier agencies employing over 100 people. Across the district, more than 15 agencies are estimated to be operating, with the delivery workforce currently at around 300-350.
This number is expected to increase to approximately 500-550 during the festive season as online orders rise.
Ravi Kumar Purve, manager of a delivery courier company, said his agency currently employs 15 delivery personnel and would need additional workers during the festive period.
“During the festival season, about 10 additional workers are needed,” Purve said.
Delivery personnel are reportedly paid around ₹12-15 per package, depending on the agency and delivery arrangement. The work typically involves delivering parcels within designated areas.
The seasonal nature of these jobs allows young people to earn without undergoing the lengthy recruitment process associated with permanent employment. Those possessing a motorcycle and smartphone are particularly suited to such delivery work.
The expansion of e-commerce into smaller towns is also widening the scope of gig employment beyond major urban centres. With festive shopping increasingly shifting online, the surge in orders is expected to provide temporary earning opportunities for hundreds of young people in Madhubani.
“The number of delivery jobs increases exponentially as online orders increase,” according to information attributed to delivery agencies.
