Patna, Aug 30: Sand is expected to become more readily available and affordable in Bihar with the Mines and Geology Department preparing to resume mining at around 161 new sand ghats next month.
The new sites comprise 107 yellow sand ghats and 54 white sand ghats, for which the settlement process has already been completed, according to the department.
Mining is expected to begin primarily in Bhojpur, Arwal, Aurangabad, Patna, Gaya and Jamui districts, increasing the supply of sand for construction activities.
With the addition of the new sites, yellow sand is expected to be available from around 311 operational ghats, while the number of operational white sand ghats is likely to rise to approximately 89.
The department expects the increased availability to help ensure that sand is supplied at reasonable prices, providing relief to people engaged in construction and related activities.
At present, mining is being carried out at around 204 yellow sand ghats and 35 white sand ghats across the state.
River sand mining is currently prohibited between June 15 and October 15 every year in accordance with environmental guidelines. Mining at the newly settled ghats will begin once the seasonal restrictions are lifted.
Bihar has identified 466 yellow sand ghats and 541 white sand ghats across the state. However, a large number of identified sites are yet to be auctioned.
Around 452 ghats have not been auctioned, and the department has directed district magistrates to initiate the auction process for the unlisted ghats.
The Mines and Geology Department is also working on settling additional sand ghats as part of efforts to increase availability and strengthen the supply of sand across Bihar.
Officials expect the expansion of mining operations to improve supply and help stabilise sand prices, particularly during the construction season.
