Kathmandu, Sep 18: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,410, while 6,145 people remain missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The latest figures were released by the disaster management authority on Thursday evening. The floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, caused widespread destruction in northern and central parts of the country.
The Bhotekoshi River carried the floodwaters downstream, sweeping away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging several hydropower projects.
According to NDRRMA data, 364 bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, the highest among the affected districts. This was followed by Nawalparasi East with 232 bodies, Nawalparasi West with 222 and Nuwakot with 203.
Authorities have also recovered 199 bodies in Rasuwa, 78 in Gorkha, 72 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahu. Two flood victims died while undergoing treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu.
So far, 13,756 people have been rescued from the flood-affected areas, the authority said.
A joint command of security personnel continues to conduct search and rescue operations in the affected areas as authorities work to locate those still missing and provide assistance to survivors.
