Eight youths detained during Gen Z group protest at Maitighar

Kathmandu, Dec 23: Police on Sunday took eight youths into custody following a demonstration organised by the Gen Z Group at Maitighar Mandal, a restricted protest area in the capital.

According to police officials, the protest—led by Miraj Dhungana—was carried out without prior permission from the District Administration Office (DAO), which is mandatory for holding assemblies, demonstrations, sit-ins, or rallies at Maitighar Mandal.

Those taken under control include Rabi Kiran Hamal, police said.

Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, confirmed the detention and said the action was taken for violating legal provisions governing public protests.

Police authorities reiterated that Maitighar Mandal is a regulated protest zone, where organisers are required to obtain official approval before holding any public gathering. Failure to comply with these provisions may lead to detention or dispersal under existing laws.

The situation at the site remained calm and under control, police added.
