BJP–MGP alliance sweeps Goa zilla panchayat polls, NDA bags 32 seats as turnout hits record high

Panaji, Dec 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party–Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (BJP–MGP) alliance on Monday registered a resounding victory in the Goa Zilla Panchayat Elections 2025, consolidating its dominance at the grassroots level ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.

As per the final results declared on December 22 the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 29 of the 50 seats in the Zilla Panchayat. The NDA secured a total of 32 seats while the Congress–Goa Forward Party (GFP) alliance managed 11 seats.

In the overall tally the Congress won 10 seats the MGP secured three the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) won two while the GFP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bagged one seat each. Independents put up a notable performance winning four seats.

The elections, held on December 20 recorded a voter turnout of 70.81 per cent the highest since Zilla Panchayat elections were first conducted in 2005. Polling had earlier been deferred by a week to allow the completion of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls Counting was carried out across 14 centres.

The BJP fought the elections in alliance with the MGP, while the Congress partnered with the GFP. The saffron party made significant gains in several key constituencies, including Siolim, Taleigao, Calangute, Sancoale, Sanvordem, Dharbandora and Xeldem, underlining its strong organisational presence across the coastal state. Independents registered victories in constituencies such as Arambol and Betqui-Candola.

Welcoming the verdict, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant thanked voters and party workers for the emphatic mandate.

“Thank you, Goa, for placing your trust in the BJP and blessing us with a thumping victory,” Sawant said, congratulating the newly elected members of the BJP–MGP (NDA) alliance.

He described the results as a reaffirmation of public faith in the party’s governance model. “This strong mandate reflects the people’s faith in the Double Engine Sarkar, under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

The Chief Minister also lauded BJP karyakartas, led by state unit president Damu Naik, for their sustained grassroots efforts. “I am confident the BJP-led Alliance will accelerate all-round development, strengthen transparent and accountable governance, and work towards a Viksit Goa and Viksit Bharat,” he added.

The Zilla Panchayat polls are widely seen as a political barometer ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, with the BJP, which has been in power in the state since 2012, further strengthening its hold at the local level.
