New Delhi, Nov 3: In a significant statement made at the G-20 Standards Dialogue, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of quality standards as a fundamental driver for international trade. He acknowledged that ensuring consistent quality is vital for building trust among consumers and fostering trade relationships. Goyal highlighted India’s proactive policy efforts aimed at eradicating the longstanding dichotomy between ‘local’ and ‘export’ quality products, a mindset deeply entrenched in the consumer culture of the past.

Goyal took a trip down memory lane, recalling an era when products were distinctly labeled as ‘export quality,’ and consumers with higher purchasing power would exclusively opt for these goods. He stressed the need to break away from this traditional mindset and emphasized the government’s commitment to raising the bar of quality for all products manufactured within India. The Minister underlined the government’s determination to instill confidence in consumers by ensuring that every item produced in the country meets stringent quality standards.

“Our effort is to move out of that mindset. Our effort is that every product that is made in India will be a high-quality product. When a consumer picks up a product will be reassured of high quality and will not have to look at other products for ‘x’ quality. Policymaking in India is moving in that direction,” he said.

Goyal further elaborated on the comprehensive approach being adopted by the Indian government to achieve this goal. Initiatives encompassing research and development, technological advancements, and stringent quality control measures are being undertaken to elevate the overall quality of products manufactured in the country. By focusing on these key areas, India aims to not only meet but exceed international quality standards, ensuring that consumers have access to top-notch products without any disparity based on origin or destination.

His remarks shed light on India’s unwavering commitment to creating a level playing field in the global market, where products made in the country are synonymous with exceptional quality. As India continues to make strides in its policy framework and manufacturing practices, consumers can look forward to a future where every Indian product stands as a testament to superior quality, irrespective of whether it is meant for the local market or international export.
