Mumbai, Feb 06 : The BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has issued a resolution making Marathi mandatory for all official communication in government and semi-government offices across the state. The move aims to promote and preserve the Marathi language and culture, with strict enforcement measures outlined in the resolution.
The resolution mandates that employees in government offices, local bodies, and state-run corporations must speak Marathi when interacting with visitors, except for those from other states or countries. Proposals, correspondence, orders, and messages within government offices must also be in Marathi, with boards displayed prominently outside offices to emphasize the directive.
The Devendra Fadnavis-led government warned that the resolution is to be “enforced strictly,” allowing complaints to be filed with the respective heads of offices or departments if government employees fail to communicate in Marathi.
According to a PTI report, officials have been directed to ensure that computer keypads and printers support the Marathi Devanagari script alongside Roman characters. Additionally, new businesses in the state are required to register their names in Marathi without English translations.
The Mahayuti government stated that its language policy aims to promote Marathi in public affairs while preserving and developing the language. “The measure is a part of the state’s efforts to promote Marathi culture,” the resolution added.
In October 2024, the Centre granted Marathi the status of a classical language, fulfilling a long-standing demand of Maharashtra. This designation is expected to create significant employment opportunities, particularly in academic and research fields.
The state government’s decision comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen the presence of Marathi in all aspects of public life and communication within Maharashtra.
