Srinagar, September 10: Two Indian soldiers and two militants were killed on Monday in a day-long gunbattle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, the army said, as security forces pressed on with an anti-militancy operation in the region.
The clash erupted in the Guddar forest after troops, acting on intelligence from police, encountered militants who opened fire. The army said the dead included Subedar Perbhat Gaur, a junior commissioned officer, and Lance Naik Narender Sindhu, who were evacuated after being injured but later succumbed.
“The Army honours the supreme sacrifice of the bravehearts in line of duty for the nation,” the Chinar Corps said in a statement, adding that the identities of the slain militants were being verified and the operation was continuing.
Separately, the Border Security Force (BSF) said it had detained a Pakistani intruder late on Sunday near the International Border in Jammu’s Suchetgarh sector. Identified as Siraaj Khan from Pakistan’s Punjab province, he was found carrying Pakistani currency.
The BSF said Khan ignored warnings and advanced aggressively towards the border fence before being fired upon and taken into custody. He has been handed over to police, and India will lodge a protest with Pakistan.
