Two Delhi schools receive bomb threat emails, students evacuated

New Delhi, July 14: Authorities evacuated two schools in the Indian capital on Monday after they received bomb threat emails, prompting a full-scale emergency response involving bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs, and fire and police personnel, officials said.

The threats were sent to CRPF Public School in Dwarka Sector 16 and Navy School in Chanakyapuri, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) confirmed. No explosives were found during initial searches, but security personnel continued to comb the premises.

“Students and staff were safely evacuated, and the situation is under control,” a Delhi Police official said.

The latest threats come amid heightened security protocols following similar hoax threats earlier this year. In February, a private school and a Delhi University college received separate bomb threat emails, both later deemed false alarms.

In response to growing concerns, the Directorate of Education (DoE) in May issued a 115-point Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling bomb threats in schools. The directive, issued in coordination with the Delhi High Court and disaster management agencies, applies to all government, aided, minority, and recognised unaided private schools.

The SOP mandates regular mock drills, surveillance installation, and strict access controls. School heads are responsible for coordinating with emergency services, while students and staff are required to follow safety protocols.

“Every threat will be treated as real,” the SOP states, urging schools to report incidents without delay and avoid causing panic.

The procedure outlines four stages — prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. It includes pre-identified evacuation routes, provisions for children with disabilities, and the need for updated contact information for parents. Schools must also offer counselling after such incidents and can resume classes only after safety is fully restored.

While some private schools claim full compliance, parent associations have raised concerns over infrastructure gaps and called for transparent implementation monitoring to safeguard students.
