Hyderabad, Dec 23: A 20-year-old B.Tech student died by suicide in Hyderabad after her boyfriend allegedly refused to marry her, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday under the jurisdiction of the Meerpet Police Station. The woman, identified as Viharika, was a resident of Almasguda.

According to the police, Viharika had been in a relationship for the past few years with a man from the same locality, identified as Kishore. Recently, the man reportedly refused to marry her, following which the woman was said to be under severe mental distress.

Police said that Viharika left her home on December 17, prompting her parents to lodge a missing complaint. She returned home the following day. After her return, her parents approached the man with a marriage proposal, but he again refused, officials said.

Depressed over the repeated refusal, the woman died by suicide by hanging at her residence, police added. Her body was later shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examination.

“A case has been registered against the man, and investigation is in progress,” the Station House Officer of Meerpet Police Station told Siasat.com. Police sources said the woman was under distress following the refusal to marry.

Further investigation into the circumstances leading to the death is underway.
