New Delhi, August 28: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday celebrated Raksha Bandhan with school students from different parts of the country at Rashtrapati Bhavan and urged them to extend the festival’s message of love, care and protection to the natural environment.
Addressing the students, the President highlighted the importance of protecting trees and plants amid growing concerns over ecological imbalance. She encouraged the children to tie rakhis to trees as a symbolic expression of their commitment to safeguarding nature.
Murmu said young people have an important role in preserving the environment and urged them to make tree plantation and the continued care of plants a long-term responsibility.The special programme was attended by 122 participants, comprising 89 students and 32 teachers.
Representatives from 17 states, one Union Territory, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti participated in the event. The group also included 13 Children with Special Needs.The students are visiting New Delhi as part of an educational tour covering several important national institutions and heritage sites.
On August 27, they visited the Prime Ministers’ Museum. After the programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan, they took part in guided tours of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Amrit Udyan.
The students are also scheduled to visit the Raipithora Cultural Complex, where they will see the exhibition titled “The Light and the Lotus: Relics of an Awakened One” and view sacred Buddhist relics.
The educational tour will conclude with visits to the National Science Centre, National War Memorial and India Gate on August 29.
The programme seeks to combine cultural exposure with educational learning while encouraging students to develop a stronger sense of environmental responsibility and appreciation for India’s heritage.
