Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh), July 18: A 12-year-old boy was killed after a crocodile attacked him while he was washing his hands and feet in the Ghaghara River in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, officials said.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening in the Baundi police station area, around 45 km from the district headquarters. The deceased, identified as Sunil Singh, had accompanied his uncle to a paddy field for transplantation work.

According to reports, Sunil went to the riverbank to wash his hands and face before returning home when a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and grabbed him. His uncle and several villagers rushed to rescue the child and tried to pull him to safety, but the reptile dragged him into deeper waters.

Police said the boy’s body was recovered nearly five hours after the attack. A video purportedly showing parts of the incident surfaced on social media and went viral. Authorities have confirmed the authenticity of the footage.

The incident has triggered concern among residents of riverside villages, who have demanded measures to prevent human-wildlife conflict in the area.
