Patna, Aug 31: Bihar is set to witness another spell of heavy rainfall on Tuesday, with the Meteorological Department forecasting very heavy rain in four districts and heavy showers in eight others, besides thunderstorms and lightning across around 20 districts.
An orange alert has been issued for Aurangabad, Bhabua, Gaya and Rohtas, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. A yellow alert is in place for Begusarai, Buxar, Jehanabad, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Nalanda, Nawada and Sheikhpura.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely across parts of south-central, north-western and south-western Bihar, including Patna. The state capital may receive scattered rainfall, with moderate showers possible at some places.
The weather is expected to remain unsettled across much of the state.
Despite nearly three months of the monsoon season, Bihar continues to face a significant rainfall deficit. The state has so far recorded 40 per cent less rainfall than normal, according to the meteorological report.
“There is a 40 percent shortage of rain in the state so far,” the report said.
The latest forecast indicates that “there is a possibility of extremely heavy rain in four districts of Bihar and heavy rain in eight districts.”
Rainfall was already recorded at several places on Monday. Madanpur in Aurangabad received 130.4 mm, the highest among the listed locations. Deo recorded 98.6 mm, Kutumba 88.6 mm, Rafiganj 70.4 mm, Dumraon in Buxar 67.8 mm, Piprakoti in East Champaran 61.4 mm and Shahpur in Bhojpur 57.4 mm.
Rohtas recorded 57.2 mm, while Obra in Aurangabad received 56.2 mm and Banke Bazar in Gaya recorded 48.4 mm.
Aurangabad witnessed very heavy rainfall at one or two places on Monday, while light rain was reported in parts of Muzaffarpur.
Patna remained cloudy and humid for much of Monday, with the maximum temperature recorded at 33.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 27.8 degrees Celsius.
Gaya recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.3 degrees Celsius. Bhagalpur recorded 32.2 degrees Celsius and 26.8 degrees Celsius, while Muzaffarpur recorded 32.0 degrees Celsius and 27.7 degrees Celsius.
“There are chances of thunder and lightning in about 20 districts of South Central, North Western and South Western Bihar including Patna,” the report said.
“There may be scattered rain in Patna on Tuesday. Moderate rain is expected at some places,” it added.
