New Delhi, July 30: The 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026 began in the national capital on Thursday, bringing together athletes from 25 Commonwealth countries for a week-long competition.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said international sporting events play an important role in strengthening ties among participating nations and promoting mutual understanding.
She said sports have the ability to bring people together beyond differences of language, culture and nationality. The Chief Minister added that Delhi is prepared to host major international sporting events and that the government is working to strengthen sports infrastructure and improve facilities across the city.
Delhi Sports Minister Ashish Sood said it was a matter of pride for the national capital to welcome athletes representing 25 Commonwealth nations. He said sports serve as a common platform that connects people and promotes the values of friendship, sportsmanship and excellence.
Players from countries including England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Scotland, Wales, Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago are expected to participate in the championship.
The seven-day tournament will feature competitions across several categories, with the final matches scheduled to be held on August 2.
The championship is expected to provide an international platform for leading table tennis players while also highlighting Delhi’s growing capacity to host major sporting events.
