Ahmedabad, May 28 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched infrastructure and railway projects worth more than 820 billion rupees ($9.8 billion) during a two-day visit to his home state of Gujarat, marking his first trip to the region following the conclusion of Operation Sindoor.
During the visit, which began on Sunday, Modi inaugurated new rail services, laid foundation stones for various development initiatives, and addressed large public gatherings in Dahod, Bhuj, Ahmedabad, and Gandhinagar.
In Dahod on Monday, the Prime Minister virtually flagged off two new train services, including the Sabarmati–Veraval Vande Bharat Express and the Valsad–Dahod Express. The Sabarmati–Veraval service is expected to enhance connectivity to Somnath, a key pilgrimage destination, while the Valsad–Dahod train will operate daily across a 346-km route, stopping at 12 stations.
Modi also inaugurated a new electric locomotive manufacturing facility in Dahod, developed under the government’s Make in India initiative at a cost of over 210 billion rupees. He laid the foundation stone for additional railway and infrastructure projects in the region, collectively valued at 240 billion rupees.
In a separate development, the Prime Minister inaugurated four group water supply schemes in Mahisagar and Dahod districts, aiming to provide clean drinking water to more than 460,000 people across 193 villages and one town. The projects cost approximately 1.81 billion rupees.
Later on Monday, Modi visited Bhuj, where he launched a slate of development projects worth over 534 billion rupees. These include port infrastructure at Kandla, solar energy facilities, power transmission networks, and road projects, spanning multiple districts including Kutch, Jamnagar, and Gir Somnath.
On Sunday evening, Modi led a three-kilometre roadshow from Ahmedabad airport to Indira Bridge, where he was welcomed by tens of thousands of supporters. He stayed overnight at the Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
On Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister held another roadshow in Gandhinagar, followed by an event at Mahatma Mandir where he inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth 55.36 billion rupees. These included over 22,000 housing units built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and Phase-3 of the Sabarmati Riverfront development, estimated at 10 billion rupees.
Under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, Modi also distributed cheques worth 33 billion rupees to urban local bodies to support ongoing urban development initiatives.
