New Delhi, June 15: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-nation tour on Saturday, visiting Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia in a diplomatic outreach aimed at deepening strategic ties, expanding economic cooperation, and expressing gratitude for international support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism.

The trip marks Modi’s first overseas visit since Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan last month.

Modi’s first stop is the Republic of Cyprus, where he will hold talks with President Nikos Christodoulides on June 15–16. The visit focuses on boosting cooperation in trade, investment, security, and technology.

“Cyprus is a close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU. The visit provides an opportunity to build upon the historical bonds and expand our ties,” Modi said in his departure statement.

The two leaders are also expected to explore ways to enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

Modi will next travel to Kananaskis, Canada, to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. India is not a member of the G7 but has been invited as a guest country due to its growing global influence.

“The G7 Summit will provide space for exchanging views on pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South,” Modi said, adding that India’s engagement aims to amplify the voice of developing countries in multilateral forums.

The final leg of the tour will take Modi to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. He is scheduled to meet President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

“As the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” Modi said, highlighting the centuries-old cultural links between the two nations.

A key theme of the trip is India’s counter-terrorism agenda. Modi said the tour is “an opportunity to thank partner countries for their steadfast support to India in its fight against cross-border terrorism and to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

The Prime Minister’s trip comes amid a broader push by New Delhi to align with like-minded countries on global security, especially in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
