New Delhi, Mar 17 : American podcaster Lex Fridman revealed during his conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he had been fasting for nearly 45 hours, consuming only water, to prepare for the interview.

“Just to get into the right mindset, get into the spiritual level,” Fridman told Modi, who responded with laughter and expressed his gratitude. “It feels like you’re fasting as a tribute of respect for me,” Modi remarked.

When asked where his mind goes during fasting, PM Modi elaborated on its ancient significance, sharing how the practice has profoundly transformed his life.

“Your senses become extra-sharp, highly aware, and fully tuned in. Your ability to observe and perceive becomes stronger,” Modi said. “I have personally experienced this.”

Modi described fasting as a way of life in India’s religious traditions, explaining its deep philosophical and spiritual roots.

“In our scriptures, there is deep discussion on elevating the mind, soul, and body, intellect, and humanity,” he said. He also referenced the Supreme Court’s view of Hinduism, saying it is “not only about rituals or methods of worship, but rather as a way of living.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that fasting is not just about abstaining from food, but a means to cultivate discipline. He shared personal experiences of heightened perception, describing how fasting sharpens the senses.

“You may even notice the subtle aroma of water itself. If someone walks past you carrying tea, you will catch its aroma, just like you would with coffee,” he said.

Fridman’s revelation of his extended fast and PM Modi’s insights on the practice provided a spiritual dimension to their conversation, highlighting fasting as both a personal and cultural discipline.
