Ranchi, Mar 25: In a major leap for management education, Indian Institute of Management Ranchi has unveiled the country’s first Virtual Reality (VR) Case Repository, aimed at transforming traditional case-based learning into a more immersive and experiential process.

The initiative marks a shift from conventional text-based case studies to interactive, technology-driven learning, enabling students to step into real-world business scenarios through VR headsets. The move is expected to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical exposure, particularly in a fast-evolving, technology-led business environment.

Traditionally, case study pedagogy in B-schools has relied on written narratives where students analyse business dilemmas based on imagination and interpretation. While effective, this approach often limits students’ ability to fully grasp complex, real-life operational settings. The new VR-based repository seeks to overcome these constraints by offering a first-hand virtual experience of industries.

Envisioned by IIM Ranchi Director Deepak Kumar Srivastava, the repository allows students to virtually enter and observe business environments such as logistics hubs, manufacturing units, and supply chain operations.

“Instead of just reading a case, students will be able to enter the scenario through VR headsets. They can observe how goods are packaged, how trucks are assembled, and how supply chain decisions impact operations on the ground,” Srivastava said, highlighting the practical advantages of the initiative.

The first VR case under the project has been developed under the leadership of Kushagra Sharan, who emphasised the pedagogical benefits of immersive learning.

“Management education is about decision-making in complex environments. The VR-based approach enables students to simultaneously understand operational, human, financial, and strategic dimensions through lived experience. It reduces guesswork and builds clarity,” Sharan said.

The repository is designed to cater to a diverse student base. While experienced professionals enrolled in executive programmes can connect virtual scenarios with their industry exposure, freshers stand to gain a realistic understanding of business operations, thereby creating a more balanced and enriched classroom discussion.

Officials said the VR Case Repository is scalable and adaptable across sectors, including IT services, manufacturing, and logistics. It will be integrated into the existing curriculum as a classroom pedagogy tool, with necessary VR infrastructure and headsets made accessible to students.

With this initiative, IIM Ranchi positions itself at the forefront of innovation in management education, setting a precedent for immersive, technology-enabled learning in Indian B-schools.
