Ranchi, July 26: The Ranchi leg of the 135th Durand Cup 2026, Asia’s oldest football tournament, got off to a spectacular start on Sunday as Jamshedpur FC outclassed Defenders FC (Sri Lanka Army) 5-0 in the opening Group C match at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Morabadi.
The tournament commenced with a grand opening ceremony attended by thousands of football enthusiasts, underscoring Ranchi’s emergence as a major football destination alongside its established reputation for hosting cricket and hockey events.
Jharkhand Sports Minister Sudibya Kumar and Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji formally inaugurated the Ranchi leg of the tournament by introducing the players before kick-off. A total of seven Group C matches are scheduled to be played in Ranchi.
Jamshedpur FC dominated proceedings from the outset, producing an attacking display to register a comprehensive 5-0 victory over the Sri Lanka Army side and begin their campaign on a winning note.
The opening ceremony featured a dazzling display by Indian Army personnel, including helicopter and jet demonstrations, military stunts and patriotic performances that captivated the packed stadium. A colourful cultural programme showcasing Jharkhand’s traditional folk dance, music and local art forms, along with Punjabi performances, added to the festive atmosphere.
The organisers also put in place elaborate security arrangements for the event. Entry to the stadium was permitted only through zero-ticket passes, with spectators undergoing security screening before being allowed inside. The arrangements ensured the smooth conduct of the inaugural match.
Spectators praised the event’s organisation, saying Ranchi had earlier hosted several major cricket and hockey events but was now witnessing growing enthusiasm for football as well. They also appreciated the stadium facilities, security measures and spectator arrangements.
Jharkhand Cricket Association official Jaykumar Sinha lauded the management of the event, saying, “The arrangements for the entire event were excellent and well-organized.” He, however, added that the experience could have been even better had live commentary been available during the match.
Sports enthusiasts expressed confidence that hosting a prestigious tournament like the Durand Cup would provide a fresh impetus to football in Jharkhand, strengthen the state’s sporting culture and inspire young footballers to pursue the game at a higher level.
The successful start to the Ranchi leg has heightened excitement among football fans as the city prepares to host the remaining six Group C matches of the tournament.
