Ranchi, july 16: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a significant increase in the number of MBBS seats at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, raising the annual intake from 70 to 250 students.
The decision is expected to strengthen medical education in Jharkhand and improve the state’s healthcare workforce in the coming years.
Welcoming the approval, Jharkhand Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari described the move as a landmark achievement for the state’s health and medical education sector.
He said the expansion reflects the government’s sustained efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and educational facilities.
“The increase in MBBS seats is the beginning of a new chapter in Jharkhand’s medical education system. Continuous reforms and improvements at RIMS are now delivering tangible results,” the minister said.
Dr. Ansari added that the government has been working to address infrastructure gaps and enhance healthcare services at RIMS.
He expressed confidence that the institute would soon emerge as one of the country’s leading medical institutions.
RIMS Principal Director Dr. D.K. Sinha said the additional seats would create greater opportunities for aspiring medical students in Jharkhand, enabling more of them to pursue quality medical education within the state.
He credited the achievement to the coordinated efforts of the state government, the Health Department, and the RIMS administration.Dean Prof.
Rajiv Mishra said RIMS would further strengthen its infrastructure, faculty, laboratories, equipment, and other academic resources to meet NMC standards while maintaining the quality of medical education.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department Ajay Kumar Singh said the government’s objective is not only to increase the number of seats but also to improve educational infrastructure and healthcare facilities.
He noted that investments are being made in classrooms, laboratories, hostels, modern equipment, and faculty development to support the expanded intake.
He also announced that the state government plans to increase MBBS seats in other government medical colleges in Jharkhand in the future.
The initiative is expected to produce more qualified doctors, reduce the shortage of medical professionals, and strengthen healthcare services across the state.
The expansion at RIMS is being viewed as a major step towards improving access to medical education and enhancing the overall healthcare system in Jharkhand.
