Patna, Aug 29: Speculation over a possible reshuffle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Council of Ministers has set political circles in Bihar abuzz, with several leaders reportedly being considered for ministerial berths amid efforts to strike a balance between youth representation, social equations and regional interests.
Though there has been no official announcement on the reshuffle, the possibility has intensified discussions within the BJP and its allies in Bihar, particularly with assembly elections approaching.
The PMO’s official appointments list through August 25, 2026, includes Bihar leaders Giriraj Singh, Chirag Paswan, Lallan Singh, Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, Nityanand Rai, Satish Chandra Dubey and Ramnath Thakur in the Union Council of Ministers.
The reported reshuffle could see some existing ministers being assigned new responsibilities or making way for fresh faces, with younger leaders likely to receive greater representation.
Among the names doing the rounds is BJP MP Janardan Singh Sigriwal, who could be considered to strengthen the party’s Rajput representation from Bihar. The speculation comes after Rajiv Pratap Rudy’s exit from the Lok Sabha and former Union minister R K Singh’s electoral defeat.
Senior BJP leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh is also being discussed for a possible organisational role, while Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Thakur is reportedly being considered as a potential replacement. Thakur’s inclusion could also help maintain Bhumihar representation.
Another name under discussion is Manan Kumar Mishra, whose induction could strengthen Brahmin representation in the Union Cabinet. Satish Chandra Dubey, meanwhile, is already a minister in the Modi government.
NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha is also among the names being discussed for a possible central responsibility. His inclusion could carry political significance for the Kushwaha community and the wider backward-class electorate in Bihar.
There is also speculation over the possible inclusion of Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar in the Union Cabinet. If Kumar does not join the central government, another JD(U) leader could reportedly be considered.
The possible changes are being viewed against the backdrop of upcoming assembly elections, with the BJP-led alliance expected to take into account social, regional and electoral equations while making any changes.
BJP spokesperson Pankaj Singh said the prime minister periodically reviews the performance of ministers and that cabinet changes are made on the basis of established criteria.
“Our party does not work under any kind of pressure. We have been continuously working to bring the youth forward,” Singh said, pointing to the appointment of Nitin Naveen as the BJP’s national president.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also take care of the youth in the cabinet expansion and he has been doing so,” he added.
The focus on youth comes amid protests in Delhi over issues including the UGC Bill and reservations, raising speculation that the government could seek to address concerns among younger voters through greater representation in the Council of Ministers.
Political analyst Dr Sanjay Kumar said the current political atmosphere was not favourable for the BJP and that youth dissatisfaction could be one of the factors behind the government’s reported plans.
“Currently, the atmosphere within the country is not positive against the BJP. The youth are turning away from the government, and in such a situation, the government also wants to calm the anger of the youth,” he said.
“There are also protests going on regarding the UGC bill, and the government is preparing to find a solution,” Kumar added.
With Modi currently on a foreign tour, a final decision on the reported reshuffle is awaited. Until then, the speculation has intensified the political activity among aspiring leaders and existing ministers in Bihar.
