New Delhi, August 2: India’s Election Commission said on Thursday it has finalised the electoral college list for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, following the unexpected resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21.
The final list, comprising elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha, will be made available upon issuance of the formal election notification, which the poll body said is “likely to be announced soon.”
The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college as per Article 324 of the Indian Constitution. The ECI is required to prepare and maintain an updated list of eligible members under Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
“The Commission has finalised the electoral college list for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025,” the ECI said in a statement. “These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses.”
The list will be available for purchase at a designated counter in the Election Commission headquarters once the notification is issued.
The ECI has appointed P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the election. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Vijay Kumar, Director, both from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, have been named Assistant Returning Officers.
The Vice-Presidential poll is being conducted mid-term, a rare occurrence in India’s parliamentary system, following Dhankhar’s resignation less than three years into his tenure.
